We're delighted that on the Saturday evening of the Festival we'll be screening films exploring different aspects of West Cork's history. We're very grateful to Finola Finlay, Festival committee member and long-time Festival supporter and friend for bringing together the films - here she has written a bit more about them for our blog....

An addition to our programme this year is a film night, when will be showing three films all related to West Cork history and heritage, and all are productions of Wombat Media, a professional West Cork Video Studio.

The first and most recent is Seamus Murphy, Sculptor, in West Cork with Orla Murphy, the sculptor’s daughter, and Finola Finlay. This is the official premiere of this film and it will be launched by the Mayor of Cork or representative. Seamus Murphy, based in Cork, was one of the foremost stone carvers and sculptors of his time, his work forming part of the modern European tradition. We have several of his carvings in West Cork and Orla and Finola explore that legacy in this film.

One of Gormú’s most popular walks is the placenames tour and in Placenames and their Amazing Stories Conor O’Buachalla walks us through what one small area can teach us about our language, our heritage and our land

Finally, we hear from Amanda Clarke, author of the website The Holy Wells of Cork and Kerry, and the book The Holy Wells of Cork and the woman Manchán Magan called a heroine for her work on documenting holy wells before they disappear. In this film, Echoes of Faith: The Holy Wells of West Cork, Amanda takes us to three Marian wells in West Cork. The image above shows Amanda at Peter and Paul's Well.

Ciara Buckley and David Slowo of Wombat Media, as well as Finola, Orla, Conor and Amanda will be on hand to answer questions about the films - and to chat about the bits that ended on the editing room floor.

The films will begin at 7pm on Saturday 8 August at our Festival venue, Inish Beg. Please note the screenings are included for those who have weekend, Saturday day or Saturday afternoon tickets, or you can buy tickets for € 10 for the Film Night alone here
